Building on the successful Parent Transition session held in Macedon Ranges in 2012, three sessions were delivered across the Central Ranges LLEN area in November 2013. Following meetings with local small primary school principals, sessions were organised in Pyalong, Lancefield and Tylden Primary Schools.
T.O.P.S stands for Transition, Organisation, Planning and Sharing which are the basic principles used by Trainers from Pelican Educational Services to assist parents in supporting their young person moving from Primary to Secondary School.
Funded through the Central Ranges LLEN, Kaye Bills and Glenda Fisher from Pelican Educational Services presented a relaxed workshop style approach to a small and committed group of parents at each school addressing key issues and concerns of attendees.
Topics covered included;
How secondary school is different to primary school?
How to assist in organising your child?
Fostering and maintaining good relationships with the school?
Assisting with homework
Parents were given resources kits which outlined different approaches to help with project work, organising ideas, and planning tools. The feelings that parents face when their child leaves primary school and becomes more independant were also covered.
Parents fed back that the sessions had answered many of the questions raised, as a result they felt more confident with the transition process . A number of parents felt that they would be better able to assist their young person by understanding different ways they could engage with their learning post the workshop.
