Engaging Families in Careers Conversations

On Wednesday November 27, Sacred Heart College, Kyneton in conjunction with the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and the Central Ranges LLEN, delivered a Careers evening for parents of Years 7 to 10 students. The workshop focussed on the importance of having positive conversations with their children about the future of work.

Topics covered during the evening included:

  • Understanding what interests and motivates your child

  • Data and trends in local, regional and national job markets

  • Tools and strategies for constructive conversations

  • Accessing relevant careers information

  • Career resilience and the changing world of work

  • Stages of career development

  • The importance of networking

Over seventy parents actively participated in the activities, DVD’s and presentations designed to teach practical tools to assist in supporting their child with career guidance. In 2014 it is intended to expand the sessions to involve other schools in the Macedon Ranges Careers and Pathways Network.
