How can we prepare young people for the future of work?

This week some 389,000 Victorian students will head back to high school, around 70,000 into their last year. How can we prepare them for the world of work after school?

Work is changing and young people’s careers are more complex. Estimates suggest they might have up to thirteen jobs across four different industries over their careers. Their choices are also changing. Some work is being automated (drivers, lawyers, even diagnosis of x-rays – anything routine). New jobs are being created that we might not have even heard of (global mobility consultant, social media manager, sustainability officer, user experience designer). More than half our current preschool students will work in jobs that don’t exist yet.

What should we be advising young people to do, when we might not understand change fully ourselves?

  1. First, they need to finish high school. Work is increasingly high-skilled and finishing school is still related to better and higher paid work. We can help by ensuring education is engaging and relevant to them.
  2. Second, they need the right skills for new jobs. The best skills are the generic ones they can take across jobs (digital skills, communication, project management, creativity, working with others). These should be learned at school. But we can also help by encouraging involvement in volunteering, gaming, clubs, hackathons, community action, politics. Young people need to understand what they like doing, what they are good at, and how these can be used to create meaningful careers.
  3. Finally, and to overcome the main reason young people are disadvantaged in labour markets, they need work experience (and job search, job application and interviewing skills, etc). We can help by releasing opportunities in our communities – no matter how small – to help them learn what work and jobs are like, build their networks, and give them experience for their CVs. There will be a lot of debate about the changes to work over the next decade, but helping young people is not hard, even with change. And it’s everyone’s business.

Young job seekers looking for direction can find some answers at a free careers expo at Sunbury later this month.

With youth unemployment in the north-west hovering around 20 per cent, Central Ranges Local Learning and Employment Network (LLEN) chief executive Trent McCarthy said it was important for young people to map out a career plan.

He said the newly expanded Sunbury and Gisborne Careers and Jobs Expo was a great place to start with more than 45 exhibitors, including employers, universities and training providers, on hand to provide ideas and advice.

‘‘The whole idea is to encourage them to really step back and think about their career,’’ Mr McCarthy said.

Gisborne’s Carly Barker is someone who has successfully followed local pathways. Ms Barker completed a medical administration traineeship with Gisborne Medical while still a student at Gisborne Secondary College. She’s now studying for a nursing qualification while working at the clinic.

‘‘I worked one day a week, every day for a year, which didn’t interrupt school and gave me a real head-start,’’ she said.

‘‘With so many things being online, you don’t necessarily have to travel … it’s definitely worth looking into the options that are out there.’’

Gisborne Medical general manager Riwka Hagen said ongoing training was a major part of the clinic’s workplace philosophy, making its involvement in the jobs expo a natural fit.

‘‘From medical to nursing to admin, our organisation is a great example of the many options available locally,’’ Ms Hagen said.

Central Ranges LLEN is partnering with Hume Whittlesea LLEN to promote this year’s expo. Hume and Macedon Ranges councils and the Sunbury Business Association are also on board.

Association vice-president Marnie Harding said the expo would provide information about the many career and employment pathways available in the area.

‘‘SBA sees this expo as extremely important for Sunbury and Gisborne as it will help shape our children’s future and benefit our community in many ways,’’ Ms Harding said.

The free expo is at Sunbury Memorial Hall from 3.30 to 6.30pm on July 22.

2015 CRLLEN AGM & Annual Report

The Central Ranges Local Learning and Employment Network held its 2015 Annual General Meeting on 19 May 2015 at the Golden Reign Room, Kilmore Trackside,

The 2015 Annual General Meeting opened with a briefing for members about the results of the work of the LLEN in 2014/15 and the news that LLENs around Victoria have been provided with a State Government funding commitment for the next four years, after a period of uncertainty. A new statement of the LLEN’s strategic direction was also shared with members.

Ordinary business included:

  • confirmation of the minutes of the 2014 Annual General Meeting
  • committee reports of the transactions of the association during 2014
  • election of officers of the association
  • appointment of an auditor of the association for the year
  • receipt and consideration of the statement submitted by the association in accordance with section 30[3] of the Act.

Christine Cox Trailblazer Awards

Each year the Central Ranges LLEN Board recognises people (professionals or volunteers) who have demonstrated excellent leadership in achieving education, training and employment opportunities for local young people.  Each recipient is awarded the Christine Cox Trailblazer Award, and receives $500 towards their strategic projects that support local young people.  The award is named after founding board member and staff member Christine Cox.  Christine worked tirelessly to facilitate training and employment opportunities, especially through the Lower Hume VET and Pathways Cluster and is recognised for her outstanding achievements in our local community.

The Trailblazer award recipient for 2015 was:

Energy Space Events is hosting E-Oz Energy Skills Australia’s third annual Women in the Energy Industries Conference in Melbourne on the 23rd and 24th of April 2015. The conference will build on the success of previous years, drawing together industry stakeholders and equity experts to consider methods for increasing female participation in the energy sector trades and reigniting the conversation about promoting non-traditional roles to women. The particular focus of this year’s conference will be on:

  • early intervention and building awareness of opportunities for female employment in the energy sector at school age,
  • the conversation of can be done – with presentations of various existing initiatives across the States and Territories, and the opportunity to workshop and brainstorm new ideas.

This year the conference is running for two days, with guest speakers and hot topic discussions on the first day, then a workshop session on the second day.

For the first time, Energy Skills Australia will also run a separate Career Information Session for female high school students and Career Advisers. This workshop aims to encourage young women to take up these trades and to equip Career Advisers with relevant information about Energy Sector trades specific to women.

On day two in the afternoon there will be a session for Career Advisors and Students. The session will showcase some current females working in the Energy Sector and highlight some of the Career options available. If Career advisors complete the survey they get $30 entry for the afternoon.

Our Kitchen Rules ASSUMPTION College has taken vocational training in hospitality to another level for its students with the Marlhes Restaurant.

Hospitality students are trained in all facets of restaurant functions and by obtaining the relevant work authority certification during the course, such as Responsible Service of Alcohol and Food Handlers Certificate, are able to find work immediately at a variety of venues.
The student staff are courteous professional and more than capable of handling their roles thanks to their expert tutelage from Head Chef Nigel Engel, once of Australia’s most highly decorated chefs and local restaurant manager Peiter Siebel.

Chef Engel is a life member of the Australian Federation of Chefs, a life member of the Chaine des Rotisseurs, an international association of professionals in Gastronomy from over 80 countries dedicated to fine dining and a member of Les Toques Blanches, a worldwide recognised association of executive chefs.

While the Marlhes Restaurant is at Assumption College, with 19 ACK Year 10, 11 and 12 students undertaking study, both tutors are enthusiastic in ensuring all students within the district are given the opportunity to undertake training there.

Wallan Secondary College also has five students participating in the program and both Chef Engel and Mr Siebel are hopeful other schools will also take advantage of the exceptional facilities avaiable for students interested in a career in hospitality.

“It has always been the outlook that the Marlhes would be a local hub for hospitality training and expand to include other schools in the district,” Mr Siebel said.
“Video conferencing facilities are in the works so that students can attend classes via remote access and this is hoped to be operational from next year.”
“We aim to give all students a broad range of knowledge in service, from fine dining service, to café service to buffets. We aim to prepare all the students for what the industry is really like,” Chef Engel said.
“It is not just for those students who wish to enter this profession , it is also trains students in skills they can use and be employed in during their further study of choice.
“Hospitality also teaches people to work sequentially, how to study, how to work as a team and handle pressure and deal with difficult customers and errors, all skills valuable in any workplace.”
All students work under strictly regulated conditions. Wear full chef uniforms in the kitchen, smart and precise front of house uniforms, follow food safety guidelines, including the storage of food and cleanliness of workspaces.
“I am also very strict on their work ethic. On a day the restaurant is open, work begins at 1pm. That means they must be here, dressed and ready to start work at 1pm, not here, but still to get dressed and having a chat. That wouldn’t happen in a real workplace and this is “real world teaching” and that is why it is successful. These students learn in a kitchen that is the same as a real commercial kitchen.
They know how to use the equipment, what the rules are and that is why they can start work at any restaurant once their training is complete,” Chef Engel said.
Students in Year 10, 11 and 12 can undertake Vocational Industry based training at the Marlhes Restaurant.

Front of house operations are covered in subjects VET 1 & 2, with an introduction to kitchen operations, and kitchen service and cooking is covered in VET 3 & 4.
Chef Engel and Mr Siebel have nothing but praise for their VET students, with Chef Engel describing his return to cooking after years away from the craft as “a passion that has been reborn thanks to the energy and commitment shown by his students.”

The Marlhes Restaurant is named after the region in France the Christian Brothers originated from. The restaurant is open every fortnight on a Wednesday evening, with bookings available on the Assumption College website via the Trybooking program.
Bookings are full for all evenings of operation in term 2. Keen diners are encouraged to get in early for Term 3 openings.

Assumption College student Caitlin Maher is named Victorian School-based Apprentice of the Year 2014

Assumption College is proud of year 12 student Caitlin Maher, Victorian School-based Apprentice of the Year. She won the accolade at the Victorian Training Awards on September 26. Caitlin is completing a Certificate III in Aged Care at Blue Cross Willowmeade Kilmore in collaboration with GOTAFE.

Two other ACK students were finalists in the awards: Olivia Bennetts, who is undertaking a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery at the Hidden Valley Restaurant and Joel Brincat, who is completing a Certificate III in Plumbing with Laidlaw Plumbing and Drainage.

The Victorian Training Awards, now in their 60th year, promote and reward outstanding achievement and innovation in vocational education and training. They also acknowledge the strong partnerships between training providers and Victorian businesses which are vital to providing a strong skills base for Victoria.

Caitlin, who hopes to begin a Bachelor of Nursing next year, has won a $10,000 fellowship and will represent Victoria at the 2014 Australian Training Awards in Adelaide on November 21.

According to Willowmeade spokeswoman Mandy Heather, staff and residents are most impressed with Caitlin: “She has impressed them with her maturity, her compassion and her desire to make a difference to the quality of life of the elderly people she cares for.

“She … brings a youthful freshness and vitality to Willowmeade which is greatly appreciated by the residents and her colleagues. No one who knows Caitlin would be surprised if she went on to win the Australian School-based Apprentice Award as well.”

Assumption College is proud to announce that three of our students are finalists in the Victorian Training Awards as well as Assumption College being a finalist in the VET in Schools excellence category.

Olivia Bennetts is completing a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery at the Hidden Valley Restaurant, Joel Brincat is undertaking a Certificate III in Plumbing with Laidlaw Plumbing and Drainage and Caitlin Maher is completing a Certificate III in Aged Care at Blue Cross Willowmeade. All are finalist in the category of Victorian School-based Apprentice of the Year.

Assumption College is also a finalist in the VET in Schools Excellence Award. This year the College has 367 students studying a VET (Vocational Education and Training) programme in a choice of 26 different industries as well as 41 students enrolled in a SBAT (School Based Apprenticeship and Traineeship) in 17 different Industries. Mrs Carol Fisher has been the VET/SBAT Coordinator at the College for the past eight years.

The Victorian Training Awards, now in their 60th year, promote and reward outstanding achievement and innovation in vocational education and training. They also acknowledge the strong partnerships between training providers and Victorian businesses which are vital to providing a strong skills base for Victoria.

Winners of individual awards each receive a $10,000 fellowship and the opportunity to represent Victoria at the 2014 Australian Training Awards in Adelaide. Winners of the VET in Schools Excellence Award also receive prize money of $10,000 each for investment in their training programs.

The Victorian Training Awards will be presented in the Palladium Room at Crown Casino on Friday, September 26.

2013 Australian Vocational Student Prize and Prime Minister’s Award for Skills Excellence in School

Congratulations to Assumption College past student Lauren Parkinson (Alumni 2013) on being awarded:

  3. Prime Minister’s Award for Skills Excellence in School in the Victorian State category

The Australian Vocational Student Prize recognises the achievements of students who completed their senior secondary studies while undertaking vocational education and training in schools or an Australian school-based Apprenticeship.

The Prime Minister’s Award recognises the student’s determination and commitment in achieving outstanding outcomes while completing their qualification, along with their involvement in the community and their leadership qualities. These awards promote the benefits of vocational education and reflect the commitment of schools to making vocational learning a valuable and rewarding experience for students. The PM’s Award has been awarded to no more than 20 students annually since 2005. This really is a wonderful achievement for both the student and the school.

Lauren Parkinson is someone with a lot of experience providing care to others. She used the illness of a family member to inspire her – to undertake nursing and, in her words, to “bring dignity and respect to people” needing nursing. She trained in care and assistance for the elderly at the Seymour Memorial Hospital in Seymour, and later at BlueCross Willowmeade. “Lauren is a very empathetic carer who is passionate about delivering person-centered care to our residents” boasts BlueCross Willowmeade. It was there she picked up a Top 4 Trainee in Aged Care award at the industry annual awards ceremony in 2013. As she studied for her School Based Apprenticeship in Aged Care, Lauren was equally active on the sports field. She not only completed a Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance and a Certificate III in Aged Care, she also undertook a Certificate II in Sport and Recreation.Her teachers and nominator agree – Lauren is a remarkable young woman. As she starts out on her Bachelor of Nursing at RMIT in 2014, she will no doubt continue to inspire with the sensitivity and compassion she brings to those needing care.
