On Track 2004

On Track is a Victorian Government initiative designed to ensure that Year 10 to 12 government and non government school students are on a pathway to further education, training or employment after leaving school.

On Track data for students completing year 12 in 2003 shows :
- 11.1% of students completing Yr 12 were employed full time compared to a state average of 7.8%
- 10.2% of students were in a Traineeship or apprenticeship compared to a state average of 6.3%
- 34.9% enter uninversity compared to a state average of 42.8%
- 18.5% enter a Certificate 4 level or above course compared to the State's 19.8%
- 5.9% of students completing Year 12 were unemployed compared to 4.7% in Victoria.
This data suggest that there are some excellent outcomes for some students yet there is still a considerable gap between many of the outcomes for students in the Macedon, Mitchell and Murrindindi Shires.
At a statewide level, we find that for the Labour Force regions covering most of the LLEN area, the apprent retention rate [those staying to complete school] is approximately 83% for girls and 68% for boys. This compares poorly to a statewide average of approximately 90% for girls and 77% for boys.
These figues present a particular challenge for the smaller and and geographically isolated communities across our three shires.
Early School Leavers 2003
Some things we know about students who leave school early are;
- Their outcomes are weaker
- Boys go to Apprenticeships
- Girls go to TAFE
- This is in the context of 2/3rds of all jobs for girls have disappeared since 1970's
- Girls do not have the same access to apprenticeships as boys
- Every 5th early leaver is unemployed but figues probably mask real numbers which are worse.

On Track data for students leaving school early in 2003 shows :
Over 26% of students leaving early were employed compared to a state average of almost 30%
38.4% of students were in a Traineeship or apprenticeship compared to a state average of 28.7%
1.5% enter uninversity compared to a state average of 0.2%
12.3% enter a VET Course compared to the State's 22.2%
21.5% of students leaving early were unemployed compared to 19.2% in Victoria.
