Youth Central - Roving Reporters Recruiting again!

The Victorian youthcentral Roving Reporter Program is recruiting again!

This time round youthcentral is looking for twenty Victorians, aged 16-24 to join our Roving Reporter team. They will produce articles and reviews covering launches, career expos, festivals, events and news relevant to young people and their local communities.

All reporters will need to be able to commit to completing one of the 2-day workshops to be held on Saturday August 23rd and Sunday August 24th, or Wednesday September 24th and Thursday September 25th. Participants will be trained in web journalism and digital photography to assist them in contributing content to the site through-out their tenure, and provided with on-going support through the program.

Note: All travel and accommodation costs incurred in order to attend training will be covered by the Office for Youth.

Youth Central says: We’re not looking for Victoria’s best writers-just young people keen to be involved in a youth-friendly web project.

Schools 2020 Summit

The 2020 Schools Summits were designed to get young people involved in shaping Australia’s future. And get involved is exactly what they did. School children from more than 500 schools across Australia participated in the summits which were held across Australia for a three-week period from 17 March 2008.

The Schools Summit Report, "Voices of the Future" has just been published this week.

The Federal Minister for Edcuation, the Honourable Julia Gillard has said:

I have been singularly impressed by the passion and commitment of the many thousands of young people who participated and who used this opportunity to put forward some really sound and important ideas about the future challenges facing Australia. This report contains an overview of their refreshingly innovative ideas, thoughts and solutions.

You can download the report here.

Young People Direct - Have your Say!!

Young People Direct

Are you between 12 and 25 years of age?

Do you want to have your say about what’s important to Victorian young people today?

Do you want to meet other young people from all walks of life?

Then this forum is YOUR chance to make a difference!

The Office for Youth is proud to introduce Young People Direct. It’s a new Victorian Government initiative which aims to give young people a real chance to be heard – because no one knows what young people think is important better than you do.

And this forum is the first ever YPD event! The forum will also mark the launch of National Youth Week, Australia’s biggest annual celebration of young people and what they can do.

On the day, there will be group discussions with all forum participants on issues that you identify as important to you and other young people.

But it’s not all talk – there’ll be lots of fun stuff too, like video booths, a graffiti board, information stalls and freebies, plus a free lunch and afternoon tea!

If you are interested, please see below for details on how to apply. If you want to attend, you must register beforehand because places are limited.

To register, go to globesm: www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au before March 23.

When: Saturday April 5 2008, 10:30am – 4:30pm

Where: Jasper Hotel function room, 489 Elizabeth St, Melbourne

Assistance with your transport can be porvided if you need it, so please contact Anna Saw from the Office for Youth on 9208 3209 or anna.saw@dpcd.vic.gov.au if you have any more questions.

Youth Central Re-Launched!

Youth Central Banner

youthcentral's vibrant new visual design and digital content has landed!

The new site, still located at www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au, is packed with digital movement and opportunities for young people to interact and learn - from landing a job to feeling confident in the workplace.

There's streaming video, digital stories, podcasts, practical interactive learning tools, job seekers tool kits, and more.

You'll also find the popular FReeZA and FReeZACentral websites now at www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au. This integration not only offers FReeZA and FReeZACentral program websites significant multimedia and design advantages but the opportunity for both websites to emulate the strong youth participation philosophy that underpins youthcentral.

There are now even more reasons why youthcentral makes an excellent resource for young people, schools, youth workers, teachers, career advisers, parents and anyone with an interest in working with young Victorians and supporting them to reach their full potential.

Jobs and careers section

The new-look youthcentral is a particularly valuable resource for young job seekers.

The use of multimedia like video and interactive guides will assist young people in all aspects of job seeking, training and career planning.

The jobs and careers section covers topics such as:

  • job interviews
  • work experience
  • cold calling
  • part time and casual work
  • basic rights at work
  • negotiaing conditions
  • what employers want
  • getting an apprenticeship

Dream The Dream Competition

To launch the new-look website, youthcentral is running a fantastic competition where the winner could land their dream job.

The successful entrant wins a week-long internship in the job of their choice, along with an Apple™ MacPro Computer and an iPod Nano.

To enter, young people aged 15 to 25 need to tell us what their dream job is and why. They can write about it, record something about it, or make a video about it. Alternatively, if they're already in their dream job, they can tell us about the steps they took to get there and why it's so dreamy.

Competition details can be found at www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/dreamthedream
