What is a School Based New Appreinticeship?

Guide to SBNAs

School Based New Apprenticeships give students a real head start with their working life. They are able to secure a part time job, earn money and gain a vocational education and training qualification whilst pursuing their secondary schooling.

A School Based New Apprenticeship offers students a real opportunity to develop a career and receive qualifications that are Nationally accredited and count towards their VCE or VCAL.

School based New Apprenticeships are flexible. In most instances training is completed on the job. The training has been developed by industry for industry, so the trainee is getting the right skills for the employer and the right skills for their future. They are completing a nationally recognised qualification whilst still completing all their normal school work.

What is the benefit to employers?

School Based New Apprenticeships offer employer’s good incentives and a fantastic way to integrate new employees into the workplace.

What are the options?

School Based New Apprenticeships offer wonderful career options for students in Year 10, 11 and 12. It also means that students have more choices when they do finish school.

Students can pursue tertiary studies or they can resume a full time apprenticeship/traineeship, the part time work and study they have already completed potentially takes up to a year off a full time apprenticeship making them attractive to future employers.

Wages are paid for the time the trainee spends in the workplace, which means they are paid whilst training and completing normal work responsibilities.

A School based New Apprenticeship can be integrated into the School timetable with student’s work/training during school hours.

School Based New Apprenticeships generally take 2-3 years of Work placement and training.
