MSC WORK EXPERIENCE PILOT

Work Based Learning · Student Case Study

KAYDEN HALILOVIC

Kayden spent his work experience week with Mitchell Shire Council's waste team and found an unexpected link to his goal of becoming an architect.

School: Seymour College, Year 10

Placement: Waste team

Host employer: Mitchell Shire Council

What were you expecting, and how was it different?

I was expecting a very small area of what I wanted to do. You wouldn't think waste is as big as it actually is. When I was introduced to it, it was much more than I thought it would be.

What did you learn that you didn't know before?

Definitely the measures they go through to make sure new housing estates are planned for the Waste team. Planning is another thing I wanted to do, and they put the two ideas together.

Was there a person or experience that stood out?

Tanya and Michelle have been really encouraging towards my interests. As soon as I like something, they go out of their way to follow it up.

How has it helped you think about your future?

In my future I want to do architecture, and they've shown me how I could be an architect and still follow an interest like the waste industry.

What would you tell another student?

You wouldn't think council has as many positions as it does. There are something like 60 or 70 different roles you could do, so it's a really diverse place to work.
