MSC WORK EXPERIENCE PILOT
Work Based Learning · Student Case Study
CALEB WOOD
Caleb expected to spend his work experience week shelving books at Broadford Library. Instead, he saw what it takes to run one.
School: Broadford Secondary College, Year 10
Host employer: Mitchell Shire Council
Placement: Broadford Library
What were you expecting, and how was it different?
I'd definitely say it's a bit different to what I expected. I was expecting just shelving and doing the dirty work. But I've actually been getting into all the processes of what it takes to manage and run a library. I'm getting a full view of what it actually takes to run a library.
What did you learn that you didn't know before?
Just the amount of layers there are. It is not just what you can see. It’s like 500 people working towards the same goal with each team of people all working together. The library is just one part of dozens of different roles.
“It’s not just what you can see. It’s like 500 people working towards the same goal, with each team working together to run the show.”
Was there a person or experience that stood out?
Working with Brendan. He's been taking me through everything and all the processes there are. Instead of me just doing one or two things, I've been there for every step: finding books, shelving, checking on them, and what really makes a library.
How has it helped you think about your future?
It really showed me what it takes to run a library, and what I'd need to do if I wanted to. So if I decide I want to do it, I'll know what to expect and what I need to do to get the job.
What would you tell another student?
I'd recommend doing work experience with the Shire, because you can see each and every layer of it. Instead of just doing one or two jobs, you get taken through each step of the way, so you really get an in-depth view of how the show runs.
